Mount Kourkouli: Discover Corfu’s Scenic Hill of Hidden Chapels, Historic Paths, Panoramic Views, and Untouched Natural Beauty
Despite its relatively modest height, the view it offers is truly dazzling. Looking to the south, the visitor will see the neighboring mountain of Agios Georgios as well as the other elevations of central Corfu. On the other side lies the mountain range of Aracles to the west, Kratsalo in the center and Pantokrator to the east. The area is ideal for observing some of the rural villages on the island, along with the town of Corfu, which can be seen in the background against the backdrop of the mountain peaks of Northern Epirus and Albania.
The mountain is green and lush, characterized by the classic Corfiot flora. Olive trees, cypresses, holm oaks, arbutus and many other trees adorn its slopes and offer shade and protection to its visitors. The broader area of the mountain comprises arable lands belonging to the residents of the surrounding villages and is crisscrossed by numerous paths. Of course, the mountain of Kourkouli also conceals many secrets. One of these is the small chapel of Saint Kirikos. This unique church, located outside the village of Giannades, is the only one on the island dedicated to St. Kirkos, one of the youngest martyrs of the Christian faith. The chapel is still in good condition, thanks to the efforts of the residents of the village of Giannades. Additionally, the chapel of the Prophet Ilias is also quite famous, situated in an idyllic location overlooking the nearby mountains and the Ionian Sea. Like many mountains in Corfu, Mount Kourkouli features a magnificent church, which is particularly renowned for the feast held annually on July 20th, the day of the saint’s celebration.
Away from the settlements of the surrounding area, hidden among the olive groves and cypress trees, stands the chapel of Agia Anastasia. Although we don’t know much about its history, it seems to have been built around the 18thcentury and has withstood the test of time remarkably well. In fact, it is privately owned today and was renovated in 2018, when it gained a bell tower in place of the traditional, picturesque signal tower. The area of the mountain was particularly significant both during the Middle Ages and the Angevin domination of Corfu, as well as during the Venetian rule. The raw materials it provided to the inhabitants, along with the arable land created after the draining of the Ropa marsh, made the region especially valuable.
Today, the mountain is favored by nature enthusiasts and those who enjoy hiking and cycling. It is an ideal destination for those who wish to escape from the stressful life of the big cities, the tourist areas and the crowded beaches of the island. This unique natural and historical environment allows every visitor to connect with the former life of the inhabitants of the rural villages, providing a deeper understanding of Corfiot culture and tradition.
