Giannades and Theotokis Estate
A little further north of Ermones stands one of Corfu’s most beautiful and traditional villages. Known for their rich history, the Giannades maintain their architecture from earlier years and stand out for their impressive mansions and characteristic narrow streets.
The village of Giannades is located about 19 kilometers from the historical center of Corfu and is built on one of the slopes of Mount Kourkouli, overlooking the imposing Ropa Valley. Today, it hosts approximately five hundred permanent residents and has a history that dates back hundreds of years. From the period of the Angevins’ rule to the Venetian era, the Giannades played an important role in the development of the surrounding area. During that time, some of the most beautiful mansions were built, which still stand against time and adversity today. However, towards the end of the Venetian period, the simple inhabitants and farmers of the village struggled to survive due to the feudal system, which essentially prevented their economic development, leaving them barely able to secure a loaf of bread.
Historic Mansions, Ancient Churches, Lush Vineyards, and the Timeless Beauty of Corfu’s Ropa Valley Landscape
The Giannades boast some of the most beautiful mansions in the Corfiot countryside. One of them is the mansion of Ioanna Sp. Pogiagou. This particular estate not only retains its Venetian architecture but also its ancient customs. It consists of two different buildings connected by a “covered bridge,” under which a village road passes. These two building complexes are a unique example of a mansion, of a quality that can only be found in the city of Corfu. It even features a semi-basement where oil, wine, and food that required special handling were traditionally stored.
The village has beautiful churches with significant history and importance to the island’s religious tradition. One of these is the iconic Church of St. Nicholas, which has hundreds of years of life and has developed a unique relationship with the villagers. Another special church is that of the Virgin Mary of the Giannades, which features distinctive architecture and beautiful unique frescoes.

Just outside the Giannades is a lush area that stands out amidst the Ropa plain. Densely wooded with poplars and cypresses, it invites visitors to explore and discover the unique secrets it holds. This is the Theotokis estate, a paradise for those wishing to get to know Corfiot culture up close and taste its flavors. At the Theotokis estate, you have the opportunity to sample some of the island’s finest wines, which have a rich history, and to journey into the world of gastronomy through traditional dishes. Thus, you will have the chance to approach the island’s culture in a unique way and meet authentic Corfiots. The distinctive character and identity of the place are sure to impress you, as it attempts to take you back in time to a simpler and more beautiful era, characterized by agricultural occupations and the simple daily lives of villagers. Furthermore, the Theotokis estate exports and offers you unique products from the Corfiot land, ranging from exquisite wines to extra virgin olive oil.
The broader area of Giannades is characterized by its exceptional beauty, which differs from that of the rest of Corfu. The reason for this is none other than the Ropa Plain. This vast area, which used to be a marsh, is now used for the agricultural activities of the inhabitants of the surrounding villages, who have transformed it into their main source of income. The plain possesses a unique beauty and is often compared to the famous valleys of the English countryside, inviting visitors to discover its secrets and rich history.
